Description

Alice Wheeldon became a historically significant character when a high profile case was brought against her and her family during the First World War. Along with her daughter Hettie Mason and her son-in-law Alf Mason, she was unjustly convicted in 1917 of conspiring to murder the Prime Minister David Lloyd George and the Labour Leader, Arthur Henderson. Hettie Wheeldon was acquitted. The appeal was refused. They had been set up by two undercover agents. The family argued that the murder plan was fabricated: a fantasy “a story so strange that it seems hardly to relate to the world or reality”..

Since then the case has been the subject of ongoing historical research and community action, including a long-running campaign to clear the family’s name..

Join staff and curators of Derby Museums and walk in the footsteps of Alice Wheeldon, presented as part of ‘History Makers’ at Derby Museum and Art Gallery.

The walk will take place around Derby city centre, moving at a slow pace across a two hour time period. In case of bad weather this event will be held within Derby Museum and Art Gallery.

Start or end your walk at the Coffee House at Derby Museum and Art Gallery with a freshly brewed tea or coffee and scrumptious slice of cake at 1pm for just £5.
