Discover Derby’s most famous artist and his lasting legacy. This article explores the life of Joseph Wright of Derby, his deep connection to the city, and how Derby shaped his revolutionary use of light, science and innovation. It also highlights two major exhibitions taking place this year - Life on Paper and From the Shadows - offering a rare chance to experience Wright’s work, from intimate sketches to dramatic candlelit masterpieces, in the city where his story began.
Joseph Wright of Derby (1734–1797) is one of Britain’s most important painters and Derby’s most celebrated artistic son. Born in Irongate, Derby, Wright spent much of his life in the city, drawing inspiration from its people, thinkers and its pivotal role at the forefront of scientific and industrial change. Today, his legacy remains deeply woven into Derby’s identity, with the city proudly home to the world’s largest collection of his work.
Wright is best known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, a revolutionary approach that set him apart from his contemporaries. At a time when most artists focused on classical or pastoral subjects, Wright turned his attention to the modern world, capturing scientific experiments, industrial processes and moments of discovery with theatrical intensity. His candlelit scenes reflect the spirit of the Enlightenment, celebrating curiosity, progress and human ingenuity - the same ideals that underpinned the development of the Derwent Valley as the birthplace of the factory system.
Although Wright trained in London, he consistently returned to Derby, choosing to live and work here for most of his career. His close relationships with Derby’s scientists, industrialists and intellectuals - including Erasmus Darwin and figures connected to the wider Lunar Society network - played a vital role in shaping his artistic vision. Living in a place shaped by early industrialisation, Wright developed the bold interior scenes for which he became renowned, visually echoing the illuminated workshops and mechanised environments emerging along the River Derwent, including Derby Silk Mill.
Beyond industry, Wright also painted the landscapes of Derbyshire, capturing scenes from the Peak District and surrounding valleys. These works reflect the distinctive relationship between natural beauty and industrial innovation that defines the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, where pioneering mills were set within a dramatic rural landscape. Together, Wright’s art and the surviving industrial sites of the Derwent Valley tell a shared story of creativity, experimentation and progress that placed Derby at the heart of the Industrial Revolution.

Joseph Wright of Derby: Life on Paper
14 Mar 2026 - 17 May 2026
Life on Paper reveals an intimate and lesser-seen side of Joseph Wright through his drawings, sketches and studies. While Wright is celebrated for his dramatic oil paintings, drawing was the foundation of everything he created. This exhibition brings together a remarkable selection of works on paper, including early studies, personal sketches and experimental pieces rarely displayed to the public.
Through these works, visitors can trace Wright’s creative process and artistic development, gaining insight into how he observed the world around him — from landscapes and faces to light, shadow and movement. Life on Paper shows Wright not just as a master painter, but as a restless and inventive artist constantly refining his ideas.

Wright of Derby: From the Shadows
13 Jun 2026 - 1 Nov 2026
From the Shadows is a landmark exhibition exploring the dramatic candlelight paintings that define Wright’s reputation. Returning to Derby following its presentation at the National Gallery in London, this exhibition brings together some of Wright’s most powerful and emotionally charged works.
These iconic paintings - illuminated by flickering candlelight - depict moments of scientific discovery, philosophical debate and human drama. Wright’s bold contrasts of light and darkness draw viewers into the scene, heightening tension and emotion while reflecting the excitement and uncertainty of an age driven by new ideas.
Seen together in Wright’s home city, these works demonstrate why he was one of the most innovative artists of the 18th century, and why his paintings continue to captivate audiences today.
