We are thrilled to invite you to our Celebration of Bhangra, an event filled with music, dance, and film that highlights the rich heritage of Bhangra in Derby.
Event Highlights:
Live Performance by Shakti Dance Academy: Kick off the evening with an electrifying performance by the renowned Shakti Dance Academy. Feel the rhythm and energy as they lead you through a short routine that you can join in on – no experience necessary!
Community-Made Snacks: Enjoy delicious free snacks prepared by our local community as we transform the space into a cosy private cinema.
Film Screening: ‘Bhangra Beats Derby’: Settle into your seats for a special screening of ‘Bhangra Beats Derby,’ a captivating film created by Satvinder Rana and commissioned by Derby CAN. This short documentary explores the rich legacy of Bhangra music, dance, and culture in Derby. It chronicles the history and significant impact of Bhangra in the city, highlighting international stars who have roots in Derby.
Q&A with Filmmaker Satvinder Rana: After the film, share your own memories and ask questions during a Q&A session with the filmmaker Satvinder Rana.
‘Satvinder, a former BBC radio presenter, is best known for creating and hosting the iconic Aajkal Show on BBC Radio Derby for over 41 years, making him the longest-serving Asian radio presenter in the UK. With a deep passion for Bhangra music and broadcasting, Satvinder is now expanding his talents into documentary production.’
