Welcome to the Heritage Centre for Wirksworth, a fascinating and quirky market town on the southern edge of the Derbyshire Peak District.
Just a half hour’s drive from Derby, Wirksworth - with its intriguing stone buildings and intricate network of narrow lanes, yards and alleys - is a magnet for lovers of history and heritage.
Wirksworth’s new award-winning Heritage Centre has recently undergone a £1.6m redevelopment supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Three floors of museum exhibitions and artefacts bring to life the stories of this fascinating town and its people, illustrating Wirksworth’s long history, the town’s quirky, creative and nonconformist qualities and its traditional celebrations. The centre tells the story of Wirksworth folk - how their lives have been influenced through the changing industries of lead mining, quarrying and textiles; of famous characters, and of the more recent regeneration of the town as a centre for culture and the arts.
The Heritage Centre's in-house Webster’s Café is open daily (including Sundays) offering hot and cold drinks, a selection of cakes, snacks and delicious home-made meals, including vegetarian options. Indoor and outdoor courtyard seating is available, and dogs are welcome in the courtyard. The centre is fully accessible for wheelchair users on all floors and is equipped with hearing loops. Assistance dogs are permitted throughout the building.
Wirksworth Heritage Centre is open daily 9am to 5pm, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Last entry to museum 4pm. Websters Café is open 9am to 4.30pm.
