Description

At 130 Hectares or 320 Acres, Allestree Park is the largest public open space in Derby.

This urban park bridges the gap between the built environment and green countryside on the northern edge of Derby City. Allestree Park boasts some of the best views in Derby from the edge of ‘Big Wood’ looking over the Derwent valley. There are lakeside walks, mature woodlands to explore, grasslands to picnic on and wildflower meadows to bask with butterflies. You may even come across a roaming Highland cow in autumn as they graze the vast meadows.

There are two FREE rough stone car parks (Burley Hill and Woodland Road) and toilet facilities.

Why not take a self-guided tour around the park, with one of the two Friends of Allestree Park Nature trails. We advise sensible footwear as these trails will take you over stone tracks and muddy ground.

Rewilding

Allestree Park is a much-loved Derby City Park and a haven for wildlife. The site of a Community Rewilding Project, Allestree Park is undergoing changes led by nature and supported by the people of Derby, making it even richer for people and wildlife.

Led by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust in partnership with Derby City Council and the University of Derby, this is the UK’s largest urban rewilding project. Backed by over £1 million from The National Lottery Climate Action Fund, the project is helping wildlife flourish, improving access and creating an even more inspiring place to visit.

Find out more about rewilding and the timeline for the project on the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust website.
