Description
Eighteenth-century Buxton attracted visitors in search of health, diversion and marriage.
Consequently, bathing and drinking the waters formed only part of the daily routine. Using Lady Hester Newdigate’s letters and the account book of Lady Jane Macartney, Dr Collinge presents an entertaining account of learning to swim, opium consumption, assemblies, social encounters, excursions and shopping.
About Dr Peter Collinge:
Dr Peter Collinge is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His research focuses on female enterprise in Georgian Derbyshire, the poor laws, and health, leisure and tourism. Recent publications include articles on Kedleston spa and inn, and country house visitors in the eighteenth century.
