Description

Weaving along a river route within the city will be the return of Festé’s Community Procession, with 2023’s Riverlife.

Expect a river themed extravaganza, with carnival costumes and dancers; samba drumming; movement and creativity; river creatures and glowing insects, and Fire Breakdancing.

Plus Autin Dance Theatre’s Giant Wheel and Soundcatchers – illuminated aliens on stilts. Noise, colour and community will be the flavour of its return as the procession seeks to reignite the city’s streets with community and professional arts, and festivities and performances.

The procession leads into the festival’s headline evening shows: TOTEMSFinale and a fireworks display with a difference.

We are also inviting Derby communities to be part of the action by signing up to processional making and workshops, hosted at the Museum of Making over the summer. They are also invited to be part of the drumming troop that leads the procession by signing up for free Samba drumming workshops.

River Life Procession FAQs:

Where does the River Life Procession take place?

The River Life Procession starts at Cathedral Green, travels down the river path behind Premier Inn, crosses Derwent Street at Exeter Bridge and continues along the river path behind the Council House to River Gardens. The procession then returns, led by Quidams, Totems, along the same route for the finale at Cathedral Green.

Do you have to join the procession to take part in the evening?

No you can simply go to any of the watch points along the route and see the entertainment that is taking place there. You can download your River Life map here: River Life Procession Map.

Will there be security at the procession?

There will be security and stewards as well as character hosts leading the parade and managing the safety of the audience. Please follow instruction from the security, stewards and hosts.

How long will the procession take.

The procession will take approx. 35 minutes each way. Due to the narrow path and access to Exeter Bridge the procession will move slowly. Please be patient and follow instructions from the security, stewards and hosts.
