Description
As part of Derby Season of Light 2024 festival we shine a light on Islamic Art. Learn how to construct a geometric pattern from the Taj Mahal using a ruler and compass.
During this beginner’s introduction to Islamic geometry, learn how to draw a historical pattern from Islamic traditions, in particular an eight-fold pattern from the Taj Mahal, Agra, India. We will create a geometric pattern template and go through the process of transferring and repeating the process on to watercolour paper.
The session will include a chance to explore painting techniques so you can create your own painting. No prior experience is required. Parents or guardians are encouraged to participate if child is under 12.
Participants will require the following materials for the workshop:
A4 plain paper x 3 sheets (drawing or printer paper)
A compass (a school compass can be used)
A sharp pencil
Ruler
Sharpener
Eraser
Masking tape or washi tape
Tracing paper Watercolour paper (250gsm or 300gsm is recommended)
To paint: It’s helpful to have one of the following - watercolour pencils, watercolour paints or gouache paints to create your painting Paintbrushes (a couple of different sizes are helpful, but not essential. Safira will be demonstrating with round brushes in sizes 2 and 4) A jar of water Tissues or kitchen towel Optional: Coloured pencils or fine liners to help with drawing the pattern.
