Discover the remains of Hogarth’s divided kingdom in Derby
William Hogarth was a uniquely gifted artist whose work documented a series of revolutionary changes and social shifts within eighteenth century British society – from the emerging patriotism and proto-nationalism within Britain, to the problem of growing materialism and a perceived moral decline, as well as the ongoing religious conflict, punctuated by the Jacobite Rebellion.
Derby was no exception to these social changes. As a growing agricultural town, Derby was at the forefront of this change, a melting pot of old traditions and new concepts. Forgotten everyday places in Derby were once the catalysts for a divided kingdom.
Join the University of Derby’s Harry Sylvester and James Greenwood on this walking tour of the modern city of Derby, exploring some of the key stories and landmarks of Derby as they examine eighteenth century social mores and upheavals across the city. What is left of Hogarth’s ‘divided kingdom’ in today’s Derby?
