If you’re looking for a unique and exciting family day out in Derbyshire, a visit to the National Tramway Museum is a must! Nestled in the picturesque village of Crich, near Matlock Bath, this one-of-a-kind attraction is packed with things to see, do, and explore for all ages. Even the family dog is invited!
 
Step back in time… and hop on board!
 
With over 60 beautifully restored vintage trams, this isn’t your average museum—you can actually ride some of them! Trams run regularly throughout the day (around every 10 minutes), so you can hop on and off as much as you like. Unlimited rides are all part of the experience, a real highlight during your visit.
Wander through a charming recreated period street where history comes to life. Pop into traditional shops like Barnett’s Sweet Shop, grab a bite at the Red Lion Pub, or refuel at the Tram Stop Cafe. Many of the buildings are open to explore, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to discover something new around every corner. Even the dog is welcome to ride the trams or enjoy the woodland walk! Please note your four-legged friend can’t go in the indoor play areas or Tram Stop Cafe.
 
Outdoor adventures - Take a stroll down the woodland walk where along the way, you’ll find a fun sculpture trail, a mini maze, and an adventure playground waiting at the bottom. It’s perfect for burning off energy while enjoying the fresh Derbyshire air.
Indoor fun - If the weather turns, there’s still lots to keep families entertained indoors. Younger children will love the tram-themed soft play area, while the exhibition hall showcases trams from across the decades, complete with interactive displays. You can even peek into the workshop to see restoration work in action! Don’t miss the Discovery and Learning Centre, dress-up areas, and fascinating exhibitions in the recreated Derby Assembly Rooms.
 
Throughout the season, and most included in your annual pass, there are many events from Magical May to Dinosaur Day —so no two visits feel the same!

Food & drink - There are plenty of options on site, including the Tram Stop Café for lunches, the Red Lion Pub for snacks, plus Matlock Meadows ice cream and hot drinks kiosks.

Even better - your ticket gives you unlimited return visits for 12 months (during standard opening days), making it fantastic value for repeat family days out! Parking - There’s a large car park on site—and it’s completely free.
