Description

As part of ‘The year of Joseph Wright’ Derby Museums invites you to a series of specially curated talks about the life and work of Joseph Wright, exploring new and ongoing research from leading professionals across the country.

In his later career Joseph Wright turned to landscape painting, including dramatic night scenes of erupting volcanoes, burning cottages and illuminated factories.

This lecture examines Wright’s luminous landscapes, by day and night, in terms of the wider taste for landscape at the time (in exhibitions, design, literature and theatre), of the cultural significance of Derbyshire landscapes and connections with Wright’s earlier interior scenes displayed in the current exhibition From the Shadows.

This talk is presented as part of Joseph Wright Rediscovered: a series of talks organised by Derby Museums and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.

Suitable for Adults (18+). Booking essential. Limited places.
