Description

Elgar: Morning & Night

Sinfonia Viva's afternoon series at Derby’s Museum of Making puts the spotlight on individual musicians, as they share with you some of the music they most enjoy playing in an intimate and conversational environment.

This time it’s the turn of the orchestra's leader, Sophie Rosa, and her long-time collaborator, pianist Ian Buckle. Together they’ve released three albums of violin and piano music, most recently 2023’s Closing Statements.

Hear Elgar’s companion pieces Chanson de Matin and Chanson de Nuit alongside his wistful Salut d’Amour, written for his wife-to-be, the author Caroline Alice Roberts. Our duo also perform virtuosic works by Robert Schumann and Friedrich Gernsheim, and a stunning sonata by 17th century Italian composer, Isabella Leonarda.

Enjoy top-class musicianship up close and personal. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more enjoyable afternoon in Derby than this.

Programme:
Leonarda | Sonata Duodecima, Op.16
Elgar | Salut d’Amour
Schumann | Violin Sonata No.1, Op.105
Elgar | Chanson de Matin
Elgar | Chanson de Nuit
Gernsheim | Violin Sonata No.1, Op.4

Performers:
Sophie Rosa – violin
Ian Buckle – piano
