Description
Folk horror cinema often conjures up a picture of Britain in the 1960s and ‘70s, but there’s more to this genre than pagan cults in rural settings. Filmmakers, writers and artists from around the world have been reinventing folk horror for the contemporary moment, offering an ethnography of different places and world cultures.
In this 5 week course, led by Clelia McElroy, we will explore and discuss the intersections of folklore and horror cinema in different parts of the world, examining the link between cultural belief and sociopolitical context.
Week 1: British Isles
Week 2: North America
Week 3: East Asia
Week 4: Slavic Countries
Week 5: West Africa
