Alice’s extensive research explores the profound ways in which parenthood transforms the creative process and artistic expression, both challenging and enriching them, uncovering the many myths of an artist-parent. 

She also looks at the ways that work and life shift and change as parenthood is navigated. The interviewed artists add to the conversation on the balance between care and creation, gendered expectations, and the resilience required to sustain a creative career amidst the nappies and school runs. 

She also looks at the impact of infertility, baby loss, and choosing not to have a family – factors which contribute to the make-up of an artist and their work.

CivicLAB is based at the University of Derby. The city is a UNESCO City of Life Long Learning and home to World Heritage Sites. CivicLAB has been designed to support academics, creative & cultural industry professionals, freelance creatives and the public to share their insights on research and practice through a place-based approach to knowledge generation.
