Derby Festé has brought hundreds of events and thousands of people from all walks of life to the streets of Derby each Autumn, to celebrate Life, Love, Humanity, Culture and Fun, in a spirited, communal way. And it’s been a blast!
But… it’s 2020, and virtually all the things that Festé has stood for are no longer things that can currently be delivered easily in a post-Covid world.
But the Spirit of Festé is stronger than its events, and its community is more powerful than its listings – it is BACK! (Re-adjusted for the times we now live in!).
Festé has adapted, with a new offering, and a new approach for 2020. While still serving the same values and deep seated needs of our community.
Derby Well is a series of events under the Festé banner that focus on our collective Wellbeing and Recovery, looking to the future with positivity and confidence. These will be events that you can get involved with over the coming months, with the first project designed to help us to Re-dress the city centre. bringing some much needed, vibrant Festé thrills back to the City, but in a way that will allow our community to reclaim the empty streets and open spaces, safely and responsibly for themselves.
The first project off the block is Derby Well Re-Dressed, a project and an invitation to get involved in a different way, inviting you to create and submit Well Dressings and Street Art yourselves – which we will display around the City, creating a trail of moments that mark our collective journeys through the year…
Drawing on Derbyshire’s age old tradition of Well-Dressing (often ascribed to the celebration of the reclaiming of clean water after the Plague), Derby Well Re-Dressed aims to blaze a trail of creativity across the borough, with sprouting pockets of art and thought-provoking culture in every corner, truly affirming that Derby is a space for everyone!
This will be no ordinary ‘arts trail’. With contributions from artists, performers, writers and craftspeople (all bursting with desire to restart their new normality), and submissions from members of the public and wider community, Derby Well will lead Derbeians through much-loved and little-visited parts of the City, reconnecting them with it, reuniting us and reigniting a passion to reclaim normality. Of course, safety will be paramount, but equally as important will be the breathing of new life into our streets, and the rediscovering of the joy of connection.
