DERBY BOOK FESTIVAL: JACQUELINE RIDING – PETERLOO: THE STORY OF THE MANCHESTER MASSACRE

1st June 2019 £7 per ticket,

Manchester, August 1819: 60,000 people gathered to hear reformer Henry Hunt campaigning for parliamentary reform to enable voting as a universal right. By the end of the day 15 people, including two women and a child, were dead or mortally wounded and 650 were injured, hacked down by drunken yeomanry.

Jacqueline Riding’s compelling book ties in with Mike Leigh’s film Peterloo, for which she was historical adviser.
