We invite you to engage with our icons and history. Derby is of course the city of makers; the birthplace of innovation. We are engineers, pioneers, artists and poets. Around ever corner there is a story to tell.
Celebrating the area’s rich history of innovation, the Museum of Making in the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site is a contemporary space, telling Derby’s 300-year history of making to inspire new creativity on what is widely regarded as the site of the world’s first factory.
Derby Cathedral is a beautiful emblematic building drenched in history and is Derby’s most visitor attraction.
The Cathedral contains the oldest ring of ten bells in the United Kingdom, with the 15th century tenor being older than the tower itself. Other treasures include an 18th century nave with a wrought iron rood screen by Robert Bakewell, the memorial to Bess of Hardwick and the Cavendish brasses, including those of Henry Cavendish and Georgiana Spencer, the wife of one of the Dukes of Devonshire.
Peregrine falcons have taken up residence on the cathedral tower, regularly nesting there. Webcams enable the birds to be seen at close-range without being disturbed by human contact.
Derby Cathedral also provides a spectacular setting for concerts, festivals and exhibitions including movie screenings. You can also take your chance to abseil 212 ft down the Cathedral - the challenge is terrifying, the cause rewarding. Are you up for it?
Explore the great outdoors in Derby like never before. We have plenty of experiences for inquisitive minds.
