White Peak Distillery

COVID-19 Update

Like everyone, we've spent the last few months adjusting. Having had to move the Distillery shop due to last November's flooding and then close it and postpone our tours due to COVID-19, we've focused our efforts online (including Zoom tastings) and with local delivery. And we would like to say a huge thank you to all our supporters!

As the lock down is easing and with non-essential shops re-opening and, as of this weekend, bars, pubs, restaurants, etc we've been reviewing how we can once again welcome visitors safely down to the Distillery. As we've heard today from the Government 'there is no perfect way of doing it'.

Distillery Shop

Our Shop has been closed since the end of March but we're pleased to let you know we're re-opening from Saturday 18th July. To begin with we will offer click & collect via our website, plus our core gins and rum on the day. We'll be doing this outdoors from a stall in the main Distillery car park off the A6, initially only on Saturdays (10am - 4pm).

All online orders placed before 6pm on Thursday will be available for collection on the Saturday. Plus we'll have our full range of gins and rum available on the day (card payments only). The plan is that you will be able to do most (if not all) of this from the comfort and safety of your own car.

With click & collect starting for those living locally, we'll be discontinuing our local delivery (last deliveries 10th July). We hope we answered a need early in full lock down, and its been great to meet safely at your door steps but it seems like more people are back at work (and generally out and about), so calling time on local delivery seems the right thing to do for our small team. We hope everyone will be happy to come down to our click & collect at the Wire Works instead.

Tours & Zoom

Whilst this is a welcome big weekend for many businesses, we've decided to wait until the beginning of September to restart our Distillery tours. As much as we love showing people round, there are a number of reasons for not rushing back into tours, including some that are site specific such as the loss of our bridge during the floods last November.

We plan to start with a single tour on a Saturday and build up to three (between 11am and 3pm) as we establish a safe routine. All bookable via our website. We will start by contacting all those with prior (postponed) bookings to offer the opportunity to re-book in September, October or November. We'll then follow on from this to open up the online calendar for new bookings. If the calendar is not up when you visit our website then its because we're still re-arranging previously postponed tours.

We'll provide more details on our new look tours, but they will be limited to 10 people and will include a branded tasting glass to use on the day and take-away.

In the meantime, we will continue with our hugely popular Zoom-based Thursday night tasting events (bookable again through our website). We started these at the beginning of lock down and the focus is our single malt (rather than gin), which can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home. We send you a tasting pack and all you need to do is download Zoom and we can meet up from a very safe distance! For more details and to make a booking, please see website link below:

New Spirits

And finally onto the latest spirits we've been making...

Most recently, in June we re-launched our Bakewell Pud gin. We listened to feedback from our customers and tweaked how we make this gin by adding a long maceration in cherry after our traditional copper pot still distillation. This has added more berry flavour and maintained the subtle almond and vanilla notes.

In late May we launched our Derbyshire rum. After more than 12 months in research, we've been delighted with the results. Most of our rum is being aged in barrels for your future enjoyment, but we kept back some un-aged, white rum and liked it so much we did a limited bottling. This has been really well received both locally and nationally (with international interest too)! We still have a few bottles left from this first batch.

That's all for now. From the whole team at WPD - enjoy the new freedoms and stay safe.

Established in 2016, White Peak Distillery is the first full-scale, craft distillery in the Peak District region. Founded by local couple, Max & Claire Vaughan. The Distillery is located in the former Johnson & Nephew Wire Works in Ambergate and celebrates the rich riverside and industrial landscape of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The Distillery backs onto the ancient woodland of Shining Cliff, which is a site of special scientific interest. As well as being at a gateway to the Peak District our location offers access to some wonderful, local woodland walks, and to footpaths that follow the Cromford Canal to Cromford Mills.

A visit to the Distillery is underscored by the passion the team has for authentic craft spirits and their unique destination for whisky, gin and other spirits. You’ll have an opportunity to learn a bit of the history of the Wire Works (originally established in 1876). On the Distillery tasting tours you’re able to sample our Derbyshire style of single malt spirit as well as our range of award-winning Shining Cliff gin.
