Summer Nights Film Festival

July - September 2017

Summer Nights is a festival of outdoor film screenings in beautiful heritage locations throughout the summer.

This year we are working with thirteen spectacular venues across the UK, all with their own unique charms. Summer Nights is organised by QUAD, Derby's Centre for Art and Film.

Here's what's on in and around Derby;

Kedleston Hall

Take a trip back in time to the 1760s at this spectacular neo-classical mansion, framed by historic parkland.

Designed for lavish entertaining and displaying an extensive collection of paintings, sculpture and original furnishings, Kedleston is a stunning example of the work of architect Robert Adam. Used as a key location for the Hollywood blockbuster The Duchess.

Bridget Jone's Baby (15) - 21 July

After breaking up with Mark Darcy, Bridget Jones’s ‘happily ever after’ hasn’t gone quite according to plan. Now in her forties and single again, she decides to focus on her career, when she finds herself pregnant, with one hitch - she’s only 50% sure who the father is. Renee Zellweger returns as Bridget alongside Colin Firth’s Darcy with Patrick Dempsey joining the fun.

The Legend of Tarzan (12A) at Kedleston Hall - 22 July

Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire doubles for Greystoke (aka Tarzan’s non jungle home) in the exciting blockbuster starring Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan alongside Samuel L Jackson, Christoph Waltz, Margot Robbie and Jim Broadbent as the Prime Minister.

Calke Abbey

With peeling paintwork and overgrown courtyards Calke Abbey tells the story of the dramatic decline of a country house estate.

Discover the tales of an eccentric family who amassed a vast collection of hidden treasures. Visit the beautiful, yet faded walled gardens and explore the orangery.

Mama Mia (PG) - 3 August

A young woman about to be married discovers that any one of three men could be her father. This musical comedy romance is set on a colourful Greek island and serves as a background for a wealth of ABBA songs. A great chance to sing-along to a feel good film.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12A) - 4 August

Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a Rebellion soldier and criminal, is about to experience her biggest challenge yet when Mon Mothma gives her the mission to steal the plans of the new Empire weapon, the planet killer The Death Star. Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) picks up the reins to direct a cast packed with amazing actors like Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen, Diego Luna and Forest Whitaker. Also returning is James Earl Jones providing the voice of the iconic Darth Vader.

Footloose (12A) - 5 August

Kevin Bacon stars as Ren, the toe tapping city teenager, who moves to a small town with his mother. Though he tries so hard to fit in, he just can’t stop the beat and in a town where music and dancing have been made illegal, this could cause a problem! There is only one thing that Ren can do….cut loose… FOOTLOOSE!

Hardwick Hall

Hardwick’s stunning Elizabethan mansion house and beautiful landscapes are the perfect setting for a film night under the stars.

Travel back in time and enjoy classic films in the splendid surroundings of the Hardwick gardens.

La La Land  (12A) - 18 August

Winner of numerous awards this year, La La Land is a beguiling musical romance set in contemporary Hollywood. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling showcase incredible chemistry as wannabe movie start Mia and pianist Seb, who stifled by frustrated ambition, meet and fall in love. A contemporary Singin’ In The Rain that has swept the board at the awards season this year.

Top Gun (12A) - 19 August

Do you feel the need? The need for speed! Tom Cruise takes to the skies in the popular 80s blockbuster as he endures dogfights, bar fights and volleyball! Featuring a raft of acting talent including Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer and Meg Ryan.

Wollaton Hall

Wollaton Hall and Deer Park is a spectacular Elizabethan mansion and park set in the heart of Nottingham.

Wollaton Hall country house is now Nottingham Natural History Museum, with Nottingham Industrial Museum in the out-buildings. The surrounding park land includes immaculately kept formal gardens, a botanic garden and the oldest cast iron glasshouse in Europe.

Moulin Rouge (12A) - 24 August

Set on the cusp of the 20th Century, Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge captures the spirit of the Bohemian revolution sweeping the underworld of Paris. At the Moulin Rouge, the rich and poor are one, being entertained by the dancers. Christian (Ewan McGregor), a young English writer starts a love affair with the star courtesan Sabine (Nicole Kidman). But her affections are also sought by the club’s patron The Duke. Club Moulin Rouge – an experience you won’t forget.

Pretty Woman (15) - 25 August

The breakout hit for Julia Roberts sees her playing a beautiful prostitute who is hired by Richard Gere’s businessman for a social event. But then they begin to fall in love…

Jurassic Park (PG) - 26 August

Wollaton Hall

A film 75 million years in the making! Steven Spielberg unleashed the full force of the T-Rex on audiences in 1993 and now 24 years later, they are back to roaring to life on the Summer Nights screen. Take a tour around Jurassic Park, a theme park showcasing resurrected Dinosaurs from the dawn of time, here now for your amusement. Carnivorous monsters separated from tourist by large gates…what could go wrong?

The Dark Knight Rises (12A) - 27 August

Christopher Nolan returns to his Gotham City stomping ground for a final go-around with Christian Bale’s Batman, adding Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) and the wonderful Tom Hardy as the brutal Bat breaking Bane to the mix.
