27th June 2017 - 9th September 2017 FREE

A display of Japanese art from our collection featuring works by Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige. The traditional symbolic imagery in kachoga (bird and flower painting) reflects the Shinto belief in the importance of the seasons and the Buddhist belief of harmony with nature. While in ukiyo-e (Pictures of the Floating World) stories are told through images of the landscape, history, folk tales and everyday life of the people of Japan.
