World's first Kilomathon 2010

Interest in world's first Kilomathon has been overwhelming. Around 6,000 runners from around the UK and across the globe will be descending on Nottingham/Derby area on the weekend of the 14 March to take part in a world first.

The Kilomathon has such far reaching appeal that entrants are coming from as far north as the Shetland Islands (a mere 680 mile journey to Nottingham) and as far south as Cornwall to take part in the Worlds first Kilomathon.  Interest has not just been limited to the shores of the UK with entries coming from Europe, Asia and America. Entrants from Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Rep of Ireland, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates and USA will be coming to the East Midlands to run the in the worlds first 26.2 kilometre road race.

To date over 60% of the entrants come from outside the Nottingham and Derby area.

The Kilomathon Race series and the Edinburgh Marathon were started by Geoff Sims who was born and bred in Derby, which is another reason that the world's first Kilomathon will take place in the East Midlands.

Geoff came up with the idea of The Kilomathon because so many people who run a marathon say "It's the last 10 miles that are the hardest" or "I hit the wall".  Geoff then came up with the idea of running 26.2 kilometres, which equates to 16.3 miles but thought that it needed a catchy name.  He then remembered the days of the Derby Half Marathon, which some may recall was called the Ramathon and simply thought of joining the words Kilometre with Marathon and thus the Kilomathon was born or will be on 14 March 2010.

The world's first Kilomathon starts close to Nottingham University and runs through Beeston, Chilwell, Long Eaton, Draycott, Borrowash and the picturesque Elvaston Castle Country Park.  From there the route goes through Alvaston before finishing in Alvaston Park in Derby.

Double Olympian Liz Yelling said; "The Kilomathon will be an exciting new fixture on the UK running calendar.  This innovative event will be a new target distance for lots of runners, from experienced looking to develop their performance or runners looking for a different challenge".
